Woman attacked by partner at popular Top End picnic spot

Northern Territory Police have charged a 37-year-old man in relation to a domestic violence incident that occurred at East Point over the weekend.

At 8:00am on Saturday, the man and his partner were in the vicinity of Lake Alexander when they began to argue. The man allegedly threw a broken glass bottle at the woman which caused a large laceration to her arm and significant bleeding.

The man then dragged the woman to the ocean, pushing her into the water before a bystander intervened and provided first aid.

Witnesses contacted authorities with Police and St John Ambulance arriving a short time later.

Police located and arrested the man at the scene. He has since been charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endanger serious harm.

The victim, aged 39, was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, where she received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Sergeant Caragh Hen from Strike Force Lyra said “Police are continuing to investigate the incident. It’s horrendous behaviour that the woman has had to endure.

“We would like to thank members of the public who rendered aid and we are aware that there were a number of other people in the immediate vicinity. We ask that if not already spoken to, they make contact with police to assist with inquiries.
